Introduction Essay for Minnesota 24/7
Sterner Stuff
By Nick Coleman
BLUE EARTH, MN. By John L. Cross: What's green, wears a size 78 shoe, and weighs 8,000 pounds? A replica of the Green Giant Company's famous trademark, of course. Located a few miles from the factory where the company's vegetables were canned, the 56-foot statue is now a pilgrimage site for road-trippers on Interstate 90 and fans of kitschy Americana.
PAYNESVILLE, MN. By Kimm Anderson: Morning fog retreats from a Sauk River Valley farm.
ST. PAUL, MN. By Joe Rossi: A system of enclosed walkways protects office workers in downtown St. Paul from subzero winter temperatures. The 50-block network, begun in 1951, lets area workers and residents forego the outdoors altogether if they so please.
AKELEY, MN. By Bill Alkofer: Outside the Akeley Paul Bunyan Historical Museum, a statue of the mythic lumberjack appears to be asking for a handout. It's not a big reach--legend has it the tree-felling hero could put away the hotcakes.
