By Susan Ager
MACKINAC ISLAND, MI. By "Bruce Edwards, The Flint Journal": An employee walks up the approach to Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel on a foggy spring morning. With motorized vehicles banned on the two-by-three-mile island, there's no gridlock--transportation is by horse and buggy, bicycle, or foot.
DETROIT, MI. By Mairin Chapman: This pink Caddy, unlike Aretha's, doesn't ride on the "Freeway of Love."" It's a come-on for the Classic Car Wash Café--a hand car wash by day and music venue by night--on Detroit's near east side.
FRANKFORT, MI. By "J. Carl Ganter, MediaVia": Predawn patrol: Ultralight flyer and teacher Pat Totten banks over Point Betsie in his "motorcycle in the sky."" On Lake Michigan just south of Sleeping Bear Dunes, the lighthouse at Point Betsie is one of 116 in Michigan, the most of any state.
GLEN ARBOR, MI. By "J. Carl Ganter, MediaVia": Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore stretches 35 miles and covers more than 50,000 acres along the leeward side of Lake Michigan. A legacy of the Ice Age, the dunes developed after glaciers spread southward from Canada, depositing huge piles of rock and sand when they melted.
